아가사 크리스티(Agatha Christie, 1890 ~ 1976)는 1890년 9월 15일, 영국 남서부 토키에서 미국인 사업가 프레드릭 밀러와 영국 귀족이였던 어머니 클라라 보머의 딸로 상류층 가정에서 태어났다. 태어날 때의 이름은 애거사 메리 클라리사 밀러(Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller)였다.
크리스티는 글쓰기가 취미였고 작품을 잡지 등에 투고하기도 했지만 처음에는 직업 작가가 되려는 확실한 의지는 없었다. 프랑스로 떠나는 남편을 배웅하고 병원 약국으로 돌아온 크리스티는 언니 매지와 추리소설 쓰는 일에 대해 진지하게 이야기를 나눴다. 언니가 “내가 결과를 예측 못 하는 소설을 너는 쓸 수 없을 거야”라고 장담하자 크리스티는 '독약을 사용하는 추리소설'을 3주간 구상한 끝에 1916년 에르퀼 푸아로(에르큘 푸아로, Hercule Poirot)라는 탐정이 등장하는 스타일스 저택의 괴사건을 탈고한다.
