Summary
The novel is in two parts. The first part introduces Jim, a young man who dreams of adventure and the sea. Conrad was born in Berdychiv, Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire), grew up in a Polish aristocratic family, was educated in Poland and Switzerland, and at the age of 16 embarked on a merchant ship. Over the next 20 years, he sailed many parts of the world, including Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
Conrad's experiences at sea profoundly influenced his writing. His best-known works, such as "Heart of Darkness", "Lord Jim" and "Nostromo", deal with themes of imperialism, colonialism, and the struggle for self-discovery in the face of adversity.
Conrad became a British citizen in 1886 and shortly thereafter he began writing in English. His early works were initially unsuccessful, but he achieved critical and commercial success with "Lord Jim" in 1900.
