꼽추이자 추한 외모를 지닌 노트르담 성당의 종루(鐘樓)지기 ‘콰지모도(Quasimodo)’와 아름다운 집시 여인 ‘에스메랄다(Esmeralda)’의 이룰 수 없는 사랑, 세속적 욕망에 휩싸여 끝내 파멸하는 부주교(副主敎)의 뒤틀린 사랑을 중심으로 15세기 파리의 인간 군상을 그린 작품이다.

저자 소개
빅토르 위고 (Victor Hugo)
1802~1885. 프랑스의 작가, 시인. 브장송(Besançon) 출생.
자유(自由), 정의(定義), 인권(人權), 민주주의(民主主義)를 위해 평생을 투쟁한 인물로 걸출한 정치인이자 혁명가로 꼽힌다. 1822년 첫 시집 <송가집과 잡영집 Odes et Poésies Diverses>을 발표하여 호평을 받았다. 1823년 소설 <아이슬란드의 한 Han d'Islande>(1823) 등 활발하게 작품을 발표하였고, 1825년 프랑스 왕실로부터 작가로서의 공로를 인정받아 레지옹 도뇌르(Legion d'Honneur) 훈장을 받았다. 1827년 희곡 <크롬웰 Cromwell>에 붙인 서문은 고전주의 이론에 대항한 낭만주의 연극이론의 선언서로서 유명하다. 주요 저서에 <The Last Day of a Condemned Man>(1829) <노트르담의 꼽추 Notre-Dame de Paris>(1831) <황혼의 노래 Les Chants du Crépuscule>(1835) <마음의 소리 Les Voix Intérieures>(1837) <레 미제라블 Les Misérables>(1862) 등이 있다.
