"마이클 셔드슨(Michael Schudson)
1946년 위스콘신주 밀워키에서 태어나 하버드대학교에서 사회학 박사를 획득했다. 현재 컬럼비아대학교 저널리즘대학원의 교수로, 동 대학 사회학과의 비상근 교수를 겸임하고 있다. 캘리포니아주립대학교 샌디에이고캠퍼스의 명예교수이기도 하다. 저널리즘의 역사, 미디어 사회학, 정치 커뮤니케이션, 대중문화 분야의 탁월한 전문가로 평가받고 있으며, 저서로는 Discovering the News: A Social History of American Newspaper(1978), Advertising, the Uneasy Persuasion(1984), Watergate in American Memory: How We Remember, Forget and Reconstruct the Past(1992), The Power of News(1995), The Good Citizen: A History of American Civic Life(1998), The Sociology of News(2003, 2011), Why Democracies Need an Unlovable Press(2008) 등이 있다. 그의 연구 중 대다수가 저널리즘과 연관된 역작들이며, 특히 Discovering the News는 뉴스의 객관성의 기원과 발전에 관한 탁월한 저널리즘 저서로 손꼽힌다. 이외에 편집한 책으로 Reading the News(1986), Rethinking Popular Culture: Contemporary Perspectives in Cultural Studies(1991), The Enduring Book(vol. 5 of The History of the Book in America)(2009) 등이 있다."
