<The Spirit of Korean Cultural Roots 30권> <우리 문화의 뿌리를 찾아서The Spirit of Korean Cultural Roots> 시리즈 30번째 책인 『한국의 문자: 한글』의 영어판으로, 한글의 창제 배경과 제자 원리, 발전 과정 등 한글에 대해 총체적으로 설명한 책이다. 한글은 창제자와 만든 시기 및 원리를 구체적으로 알 수 있는 전 세계 유일한 문자로, 그 어느 글자의 영향도 받지 않고 독창적으로 창조되었다. 이 책에서는 세종대왕이 한글을 만들게 된 계기는 무엇이었는지, 1444년 한글이 완성되기까지 어떠한 진행 과정을 거쳤는지 자세하게 서술하고, 한글이 사람의 조음 기관을 관찰한 후 그 모양을 본떠 과학적인 원리에 의해 창제된 문자임을 설명한다.
이러한 한글의 우수성을 인정하여 유네스코에서는 1989년 ‘세종대왕문맹퇴치상(Unesco King Sejong Literacy Prize)’을 제정해 문맹 퇴치에 공헌한 개인이나 단체에게 상을 수여하고 있으며, 1997년에는 한글을 해설한 책인『훈민정음』을 ‘세계기록유산(Unesco Memory of the World Register)’으로 지정했다. 이 책을 통해 한글이 과학적이고 체계적으로 만들어진 우수한 문자임을 다시 한 번 확인할 수 있을 것이다.

총 5장으로 구성되어 있는 이 책의 1장에서는 한글의 특징을 설명하고 한글이 다른 문자를 참고해 만든 것인 아닌 독창적으로 창제된 문자임을 밝히고 있다. 2장에서는 세종대왕이 당시 사용되던 한자가 우리말을 표현하기에 적절하지 않고 특히 일반 백성들이 익히기에 어렵다는 점을 안타깝게 여겨 한글을 창제하게 되었음을 설명한다. 또한 한글 창제 취지 및 제자 원리 등이 수록된 해설서인 『훈민정음』의 구성과 내용에 대해 자세하게 소개한다. 3장에서는 한글이 배우고 사용하기 쉬워 일반 백성들의 일상으로 빠르게 보급·확산되었음을 언급하고 있으며, 4장에서는 서학을 비롯해 서구 문물과 제도를 받아들이게 되는 조선조 말의 시대적 상황이 국문을 위주로 한 문자 생활로의 혁신을 가져오게 되었음을 설명하고, 일제 강점기 민족말살정책으로 인해 위기에 처한 한글의 상황에 대해 서술한다. 마지막으로 5장에서는 해방 후 비약적인 발전을 거듭하여 오늘날 경제 대국으로 성장하게 된 한국의 국가 위상의 변화 및 한류의 확산 등으로 한글의 세계화가 이루어지고 있는 21세기 현실을 점검했다.


Hangeul: The Korean Alphabet, the English translation of the 30th book in The Spirit of Korean Cultural Roots series, explains the background to the creation of Hangeul, the principles behind the design of the letters, and the process of its development. Hangeul is the only script in the world whose creator, time of creation and principles behind its creation are clearly known. This book also gives an account of King Sejong's motivation for creating Hangeul and the process leading up to completion of the new Korean writing system in 1444, while drawing attention to its scientific basis.
Recognizing the excellence of Hangeul, in 1989 the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize was inaugurated to award groups or individuals working to eradicate illiteracy, while the commentary explaining Hangeul, titled Hunmin jeongeum, was included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

The book consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 explains the characteristics of Hangeul and how it was developed with little influence from other writing systems. Chapter 2 explains that King Sejong was motivated to invent Hangeul for the sake of the common people who had difficulty reading literary Chinese, and contains an overview of the contents of the Hunmin jeongeum manuscript. Chapter 3 shows how the ease of learning Hangeul facilitated its spread in everyday life, while Chapter 4 explores how circumstances in the late Joseon period, particularly the influence of Western culture, led to the shift in literacy based on Hangeul rather than the old system of Chinese characters, and the threat posed to the Korean alphabet during the Japanese occupation period. Finally, Chapter 5 explores the globalization of Hangeul in the 21st century on the back of Korea's rapid rise to one of the leading economies in the world after liberation from Japanese rule and the spread of Korean pop culture around the world.
