촌동네에 이사온 정체불명의 백만장자(A mysterious millionaire)?! : 그는 리버풀과 런던 사이의 스태퍼드셔(Staffordshire) 탐필드(Tamfield)에 집을 짓고 사는 정체불명의 백만장자(A mysterious millionaire)로 촌동네와 어울리지 않는, 지극히 호화스러운 집을 지은 것을 놓고 동네 사람들의 뒷말이 무성했습니다.
강철의 연금술사? 황금의 연금술사!! : 대체 그는 어떻게 이렇게 큰돈을 번 것일까요? 소설에서 그는 각종 금속을 자유자재로 변환하는 연금술을 발견해 무한한 부를 축적한 과학자로 그려집니다. 세상에, 아서 코난 도일과 연금술이라니!!
“What lies in the moulds now is platinum,” remarked Raffles Haw. “We must take it from the troughs and refix it in the large electrodes. So! Now we turn on the current again. You see that it gradually takes a darker and richer tint. Now I think that it is perfect.” He drew up the lever, removed the electrodes, and there lay a dozen bricks of ruddy sparkling gold. First of all men after the discoverer, Robert saw the gold mass, when the electrodes were again applied to it, change swiftly and successively to barium, to tin, to silver, to copper, to iron. He saw the long white electric sparks change to crimson with the strontium, to purple with the potassium, to yellow with the manganese. Then, finally, after a hundred transformations, it disintegrated before his eyes, and lay as a little mound of fluffy grey dust upon the glass table. CHAPTER XI. A CHEMICAL DEMONSTRATION.
래플즈 호는 대체 왜 그런 행동(The Doings)을 했을까? : 억만장자 래플즈 호는 약혼자의 가족인 매킨타이어(McIntyre family)는 물론 자신의 주변인에게 재정적 지원을 아끼지 않았습니다. 그러나 자신의 선행으로 인해 그들의 상황이 잠시 나아졌을 뿐 그들 자신이 바뀌지 않았다는 것을 발견하고 환멸을 느끼게 됩니다. 오히려 백만장자인 자신의 재산에 대한 집착만 더 커졌을 뿐이였죠. 그도 그럴 것이 래플즈 호는 ‘황금을 찍어내는 기계’였으니까요! 그런 와중에 사건이 터지고 맙니다. 사실 그의 약혼자 로라 매킨타이어(Laura McIntyre) 또한 헥터(Hector Spurling)와 약혼한 와중에 래플즈 호(Raffles Haw)의 청혼을 받아들인, 그리 순수하지 많은 않은 인물이였다는!! 사랑을 위해 낯선 탐필드(Tamfield)로 이주한 래플즈는 뒤늦게 ‘헥터와 로라의 관계’를 알게 된 후 분노하기보다는 슬픔과 좌절에 휩싸였습니다.

Their choice of the little country hamlet as their residence had been determined by the fact of their old friend, the Reverend John Spurling, having been nominated as the vicar. Hector Spurling, the elder son, two months Laura's senior, had been engaged to her for some years, and was, indeed, upon the point of marrying her when the sudden financial crash had disarranged their plans. A sub-lieutenant in the Navy, he was home on leave at present, and hardly an evening passed without his making his way from the Vicarage to Elmdene, where the McIntyres resided. To-day, however, a note had reached them to the effect that he had been suddenly ordered on duty, and that he must rejoin his ship at Portsmouth by the next evening. He would look in, were it but for half-an-hour, to bid them adieu. CHAPTER I. A DOUBLE ENIGMA.
불가역적인 래플즈 호의 행동(The Doings of Raffles Haw) : 절망한 그는 실험실에 스스로를 가두고, 모든 연구 장비는 물론 실험 재료마저 남김없이 파괴해 버렸습니다. 시체로 발견된 그의 실험실에서는 더 이상 금을 만들어 낼 수 없었고, 그의 죽음과 함께 연금술마저 사라지고 말았습니다.... 소설의 제목은 바로 그의 ‘자신마저 파괴한 행동’을 은유합니다. 억만장자조차도 사랑하는 여인의 과거만큼은 바꿀 수 없었고, 그런 여인을 사랑하는 자신의 마음을 움직이기엔 역부족이였습니다.
래플즈 호의 비밀은 사라졌지만... : 래플즈 호는 자신에게 막대한 부를 안겨준 연금술을 불행의 유산(an inheritance of misery)이라 부를 정도로 혐오했습니다. 로버트에게 남긴 짧은 메모를 통해 자신의 모든 재산을 버밍엄의 자선단체(the charities of Birmingham)에 기부하였고, 그의 짧지만 찬란한 삶의 마지막은 아름다웠습니다.
“MY DEAR ROBERT,—My secret shall never be used again. I cannot tell you how I thank Heaven that I did not entirely confide it to you, for I should have been handing over an inheritance of misery both to yourself and others. For myself I have hardly had a happy moment since I discovered it. This I could have borne had I been able to feel that I was doing good, but, alas! the only effect of my attempts has been to turn workers into idlers, contented men into greedy parasites, and, worst of all, true, pure women into deceivers and hypocrites. If this is the effect of my interference on a small scale, I cannot hope for anything better were I to carry out the plans which we have so often discussed. The schemes of my life have all turned to nothing. For myself, you shall never see me again. I shall go back to the student life from which I emerged.
