▶ 앰브로즈 비어스 전집 제11권 1909~1912(English Classics1,226 The Collected Works of Ambrose Bierce, Volume 11 by Ambrose Bierce)는 기존에 단행본으로 출간된 바 있는 다이얼 위의 그림자와 다른 에세이 1909(The Shadow On The Dial, and Other Essays by Ambrose Bierce)와 상당부분 중첩되는 작품집으로, 다이얼 위의 그림자 1909(The Shadow On The Dial)부터 망자의 야영 1903(A Bivouac of the Dead)까지 총 40편의 수필(American Essays)과 시(Poets) 등 다양한 장르의 작품을 포괄하고 있습니다. 단 기회(Opportunity), 개에 관한 논문(A Dissertation On Dogs), 자신을 벗을 권리(The Right To Take Oneself Off) 세 작품은 전집에 포함되지 않았으며, 기존 단행본에 포함되지 않은 24편의 작품이 전집에 새롭게 포함되었습니다.
▶ 총 12권의 전집 중 작가의 대표작이라고 할 수 있는 올빼미 시냇물 다리에서 생긴 일(An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, 1890)이 수록된 군인과 민간인 이야기(Tales of Soldiers and Civilians, 1891)는 제2권, 악마의 사전(The Devil's Dictionary, 1906)은 제7권에 해당하며, 구텐베르크 프로젝트(Project Gutenberg)를 기준으로 12권의 전집 중 제1권부터 제2권, 제8권, 제9권, 제10권, 제11권, 그리고 제12권까지 총 7권이 공개되어 있습니다.(2023년 기준)

▶ A POSSIBLE BENEFACTOR. FROM Paris comes the terrible news that M. Verneuil, a chemist, has succeeded in making rubies at no considerable cost. This will doubtless prove a sharp affliction to many persons addicted to display of rubies on their surfaces, as well as to some who have them under lock and key for sale to the others; for of course the value of the natural stones must eventually fall to that of the artificial, if the two kinds are identical in composition, hardness and color. Rubies will perhaps go out of use altogether, for gems accessible to the poor are worthless to the rich, and gems worthless to the rich are not wanted by the poor. The beauty of the ruby will remain, but so will human nature. ▷ 잠재적인 후원자(A POSSIBLE BENEFACTOR). 파리에서 화학자인 M. 베르누이(M. ▶ A BIVOUAC OF THE DEAD. AWAY up in the heart of the Allegheny mountains, in Pocahontas county, West Virginia, is a beautiful little valley through which flows the east fork of the Greenbrier river. At a point where the valley road intersects the old Staunton and Parkersburg turnpike, a famous thoroughfare in its day, is a post office in a farm house. The name of the place is Travelers’ Repose, for it was once a tavern. Crowning some low hills within a stone’s throw of the house are long lines of old Confederate fortifications, skilfully designed and so well “preserved” that an hour’s work by a brigade would put them into serviceable shape for the next civil war. This place had its battle—what was called a battle in the “green and salad days” of the great rebellion. ▷ 죽은 자의 야영지(A BIVOUAC OF THE DEAD). 웨스트버지니아 주 포카혼타스 카운티의 앨러게니 산맥 중심부에는 그린브리어 강의 동쪽 지류가 흐르는 아름다운 작은 계곡이 있습니다. 계곡 도로가 당시 유명한 도로였던 오래된 스턴턴(Staunton)과 파커스버그(Parkersburg) 유료 도로와 교차하는 지점에 농가의 우체국이 있습니다. 한때 선술집이었던 곳이라 이름은 여행자의 안식처다. 집에서 바로 닿을 수 있는 낮은 언덕에는 오래된 남부군의 요새가 길게 늘어서 있습니다. 능숙하게 설계되었으며 너무 잘 "보존"되어 여단이 한 시간만 작업하면 다음 내전에 사용할 수 있는 형태로 만들 수 있습니다. 이곳에서는 전투가 벌어졌습니다. 대반란의 "그린 앤 샐러드 데이(Green and Salad Days)" 전투라고 불리는 전투였습니다.
