Wells) 등에서 ‘도시의 고통 받는 빈민들’을 심연의 사람들(The People Of The Abyss)이라 표현하였는데, 잭 런던 또한 동일한 의미로 차용하였습니다. 작가는 실제로 1902년 런던 이스트 엔드의 화이트채플(Whitechapel district of the East End of London)에서 최소 몇 주 이상 거주한 바 있으며, 작품을 통해 동시대 50만 명에 달하는 런던 빈곤층(the contemporary London poor)의 현실을 적나라하게 고발하였습니다.

▶ PREFACE. The experiences related in this volume fell to me in the summer of 1902. I went down into the under-world of London with an attitude of mind which I may best liken to that of the explorer. I was open to be convinced by the evidence of my eyes, rather than by the teachings of those who had not seen, or by the words of those who had seen and gone before. Further, I took with me certain simple criteria with which to measure the life of the under-world. That which made for more life, for physical and spiritual health, was good; that which made for less life, which hurt, and dwarfed, and distorted life, was bad.

▶ CHAPTER I. THE DESCENT. Nowhere in the streets of London may one escape the sight of abject poverty, while five minutes’ walk from almost any point will bring one to a slum; but the region my hansom was now penetrating was one unending slum. The streets were filled with a new and different race of people, short of stature, and of wretched or beer-sodden appearance. We rolled along through miles of bricks and squalor, and from each cross street and alley flashed long vistas of bricks and misery.
▷ 제1장. 하강. 런던의 거리 어느 곳에서도 극심한 빈곤을 피할 수 없으며, 거의 모든 지점에서 5분만 걸어가면 빈민가가 나옵니다. 하지만 내 손이 지금 관통하고 있는 지역은 끝없는 빈민가였습니다. 거리는 키가 작고 비참하거나 술에 취한 외모를 지닌 새롭고 다른 인종의 사람들로 가득 차 있었습니다. 우리는 수 마일에 걸쳐 쌓인 벽돌과 지저분한 길을 따라 굴러갔고, 각 교차로와 골목에서 벽돌과 비참함의 긴 풍경이 번쩍였습니다.
▶ Here and there lurched a drunken man or woman, and the air was obscene with sounds of jangling and squabbling. At a market, tottery old men and women were searching in the garbage thrown in the mud for rotten potatoes, beans, and vegetables, while little children clustered like flies around a festering mass of fruit, thrusting their arms to the shoulders into the liquid corruption, and drawing forth morsels but partially decayed, which they devoured on the spot.
