▶ 불멸자의 세상에 들어온 최초의 필멸자 : 이야기는 요정, 님프, 그리고 마법 생물들이 사는 마법의 부르지 숲(Forest of Burzee)에서 시작됩니다. 어느 날, 세상의 수석 나무꾼 위대한 아크(The Great Ak)는 버려진 인간 아기를 발견하고, 클라우스(Claus)라 이름 지어 줍니다. 나무 요정(Wood-Nymph) 네실(Necile)은 아직 인간이라곤 단 한 번도 들어오지 못한 부르지 숲에서 인간 아기를 기르고 싶다고 주장하지만, 위대한 아크(The Great Ak) 마스터 우드맨(Master Woodsman)이 정한 법에 의하면 이는 허락될 수 없는 일! 과연 여왕 줄린(Queen Zurline)의 선택은 무엇일까요?
▶ "She shall keep the babe, and I will give it my protection. But I warn you all that as this is the first time I have relaxed the Law, so shall it be the last time. Never more, to the end of the World, shall a mortal be adopted by an immortal. Otherwise would we abandon our happy existence for one of trouble and anxiety. Good night, my nymphs!"
▶ 산타클로스의 기원을 찾아서……. : 어린 클라우스는 건장한 청년으로 성장했고, 아크는 인간인 그에게 숲 밖의 인간 세계를 보여줍니다. 클라우스는 부르지 숲과 다른 인간의 삶 - 특히 아이들의 굶주림과 비극에 큰 충격을 받고, 결심합니다. 세상의 모든 아이들에게 기쁨을 줄 수 있을까?
▶ "I must devote myself to the care of the children of mankind, and try to make them happy," he answered. "Since your own tender care of a babe brought to me happiness and strength, it is just and right that I devote my life to the pleasure of other babes. Thus will the memory of the loving nymph Necile be planted within the hearts of thousands of my race for many years to come, and her kindly act be recounted in song and in story while the world shall last. ▶ 클라우스의 장난감 공장을 아시오? : 클라우스는 자신을 길러준 부르지 숲을 떠나, 동쪽 끝자락 호하호의 웃음 계곡(Laughing Valley of Hohaho)에 새롭게 정착하였습니다. 계곡에 둥지를 튼 클라우스는 집과 먹을 것이 해결되자마자 세상에 존재하는 않는 아이들을 위한 선물 – 즉 장난감을 만들기 시작합니다. 이 과정에서 부르지 숲의 친구들이 그를 헌신적으로 도와주었답니다. 릴(Ryls), 누크(Knooks), 요정들…….
▶ "There must be nothing to frighten the dear babies," he reflected; "and while I know Shiegra well, and am not afraid of her, it is but natural that children should look upon her image with terror. Hereafter I will choose such mild-mannered animals as squirrels and rabbits and deer and lambkins from which to carve my toys, for then the little ones will love rather than fear them."
▶ 영웅에게 악당이 등장하는 것이 인지상정! : 인류에 대한 증오심으로 충만한 오그와스(Awgwas)는 클라우스가 아이들에게 장난감을 선물해 그들을 행복하게 만드는 것을 혐오합니다. 아이들이 서로 다투고, 싸우는 것이야말로 그들에게 가장 즐거운 유희였거든요! 거참 고약한 유희도 다 있다 싶었는데, 아이들이 말썽을 부리는 이유가 바로 여깄었군요!!
▶ I do not know what causes a child to be naughty in these days, but when the Awgwas were on earth naughty children were usually under their influence.
▶ 선과 악의 대전쟁(The Great Battle Between Good and Evil) : 결국 클라우스와 친구들은 오그와스(Awgwas)들의 침략에 맞서서 싸울 수 밖에 없었고, 클라우스는 부르지 숲의 위대한 아크(The Great Ak)에게 도움을 요청합니다. 웃음의 계곡에서 붙은 선과 악의 대전쟁에서 승자는 과연 누구일까요?! 신화 속에 나올 법한 용, 거인, 고블린이 총출동한 대전쟁에서 오그와스는 힘조차 제대로 써보지도 못하고 스러져 버리는데…….
▶ As for the Awgwas, they had scant time to realize how they were destroyed, for the ash switches of the Nymphs bore a charm unknown to any Awgwa, and turned their foes into clods of earth at the slightest touch!
▶ 로켓배송? 클라우스는 순록배송!! : 오그와스를 물리친 클라우스는 이제 마음껏 장난감을 만들 수 있었고, 세상의 모든 아이들에게 배달할 계획을 세웁니다. 우리에게도 친숙한 순록이 등장할 시간이죠. 글로시(Glossie)와 플로시(Flossie)라는 두 마리의 순록을 시작으로 수많은 순록이 클라우스택배(?!)에 지원하였습니다. 우리가 잘 알고 있는 크리스마스의 전통 – 굴뚝과 벽난로 옆의 양말이 바로 이 때 시작되었답니다.
▶ On his next trip Santa Claus found so many stockings hung up in anticipation of his visit that he could fill them in a jiffy and be away again in half the time required to hunt the children up and place the toys by their bedsides.
▶ 세상에 단 하나 뿐인 불멸의 망토(The Mantle of Immortality) : 필멸자의 몸을 가진 클라우스는 점차 늙어갔고, 지쳐서 잠이 들었습니다. 아! 이제는 아이들이 선물을 받을 수 없게 되는 걸까요? 걱정하지 마세요! 불멸자들의 회의에서 클라우스에게 이 세상에 단 하나 뿐인 불멸의 망토(The Mantle of Immortality)를 선물하기로 결정했거든요!
▶ "And now," said Ak, "when he had won the love of all the world, the Spirit of Death is hovering over him. Of all men who have inhabited the earth none other so well deserves immortality, for such a life can not be spared so long as there are children of mankind to miss him and to grieve over his loss. We immortals are the servants of the world, and to serve the world we were permitted in the Beginning to exist. But what one of us is more worthy of immortality than this man Claus, who so sweetly ministers to the little children?"
