▶ 피카? 전기의 악마(The Demon of Electricity)!! : 나이가 명확하게 명기되어 있지는 않은 십대 소년 롭 조슬린(Rob Joslyn)은 배터리와 모터, 전선을 가지고 노는 것을 즐기는 전기 실험가(Electrical Experimenter)입니다. 어제도, 오늘도 이런저런 실험을 하던 중에 밝은 섬광과 함께 전기의 악마(The Demon of Electricity)가 나타나는데...?!
▶ "My duty I owe to myself and to my family," interrupted Rob. "I have never cultivated science, more than to fool with some simple electrical experiments, so I owe nothing to either science or the Demon of Electricity, so far as I can see."
▶ 전기의 악마(The Demon of Electricity)가 지니(Genie)보다 나은 이유는? : 전기의 악마는 롭이 전기의 마스터키(the Master Key of Electricity)를 만졌기 때문에, 자신이 소환되었으며 그 대가로 선물을 주겠다고 합니다. 아니 작가 양반, 이거 마법의 램프 속 지니잖소?
▶ "Because you have touched the Master Key of Electricity, and I must obey the laws of nature that compel me to respond to your summons.“
▶ 하지만 전기의 악마는 지니보다 인심이 좋답니다! 우리의 악마는 하나도 아니고, 3개! 그것도 3주 연속으로 3개씩, 총 9개의 선물을 주겠다고 약속하거든요. 다만 전기를 주제로 한 소설답게 모든 선물은 전기의 범위에 있어야 한다는 제약이 있습니다. 오호라, 그렇다면 우리의 주인공 롭은 어떤 선물을 요구할까요?! 여러분이라면, 전기의 악마에게 어떤 선물을 요구하시겠습니까?
▶ "But I must not take advantage of your ignorance," answered the Demon. "Also, I am quite anxious to utilize this opportunity to show the world what a powerful element electricity really is. So permit me to inform you that, having struck the Master Key, you are at liberty to demand from me three gifts each week for three successive weeks. These gifts, provided they are within the scope of electricity, I will grant.“
▶ 아직까지 전기에 대해서 잘 모르는 롭은 어리둥절하기만 하고, 이에 악마는 자신이 엄선(?!)한 선물을 주겠다고 제안합니다. 첫째 주, 롭에게 나타난 전기의 악마는 전기의 특정 원소가 저장된 알약 상자(Box of Tablets)부터 적이 1시간 동안 의식을 잃게 되는 6인치짜리 튜브(The Tube), 자유롭게 여행을 갈 수 있는 손목시계를 닮은 기계장치(an open-faced watch)까지 3가지를 선물합니다. 각각의 선물을 왜 준비했는지, 나름대로 인간의 필요를 연구한 끝에 엄선한 기물들이죠!
▶ "These forces, operating in all directions, absolute and immutable, are at the disposal of mankind. They will carry you through the atmosphere wherever and whenever you choose. That is, if you know how to control them. Now, here is a machine I have myself perfected.“
▶ 여러분은 3가지 선물을 받은 후에 무엇을 하고 싶으신가요? 우리의 롭 또한 첫째 주의 선물을 가지고 노느라 바쁘답니다. 동에 번쩍! 서에 번쩍! 활약 중인 롭에게 과연 둘째 주에 나타난 전기의 악마는 이번에는 어떤 선물을 준비했을까요? 개봉박두~!!
▶ "Now," continued the Demon, more gravely, "we approach the subject of an electrical device so truly marvelous that even I am awed when I contemplate the accuracy and perfection of the natural laws which guide it and permit it to exercise its functions. Mankind has as yet conceived nothing like it, for it requires full knowledge of electrical power to understand even its possibilities."
▶ 미국소년이 영국 국왕과 프랑스 대통령을 만난다면?! : 롭은 전기의 악마가 선물한 기묘한 전기제품으로 미국을 넘어서 글로벌하게 대활약합니다! 이때마다 유럽의 저명인사들이 등장하는 것도 작품을 즐기는 또 하나의 매력일 것입니다. 영국의 국왕 에드워드 7세(Edward VII, King Edward, 1841~1910), 프랑스 대통령 에밀 프랑수아 루베(Émile Loubet, President Loubet, 1838~1929), 프랑스 오를레앙 가문의 수장 오를레앙 공작 필립 왕자(Prince Philippe, Duke of Orléans, 1869~1926) 등은 현대의 독자들에게는 다소 낯설지만, 1901년의 미국 독자들에게 낯설지 않은 유명인이였거든요!

"It is a new electrical invention," replied Rob, replacing it in his pocket, "and so constructed that events are reproduced at the exact moment they occur."
▶ 프랑스 대통령 에밀 프랑수아 루베(Émile Loubet, President Loubet, 1838~1929) : By dint of much inquiry, however, and after walking several miles following ambiguous directions, he managed to reach the residence of President Loubet. But there he was politely informed that the President was busily engaged in his garden, and would see no one.
▶ 프랑스 오를레앙 가문의 수장 오를레앙 공작 필립 왕자(Prince Philippe, Duke of Orléans, 1869~1926) : "That, your Excellency, is the Duke of Orleans, in disguise! I must leave you for a time, that I may issue some necessary orders to my men; but this evening I shall call to confer with you regarding the best mode of suppressing this terrible plot."
