▶ 어른없이 떠나는! 소녀 도트와 소년 토트의 씐~나는 모험! : 소녀 에반젤린 도트 프리렌드(Evangeline Josephine Freeland), 일명 도트(Dot)와 정원사의 아들 소년 토트(Tot)가 7개의 계곡으로 이루어진 메리랜드(Merryland)로 떠난다면 어떤 사건사고가 벌어질까요?! 1901년 출간된 도트 앤 토트 1901(Dot and Tot of Merryland by Lyman Frank Baum)은 출판사가 삽화까지 추가하는 등 기대한 야심작이지만, 오리지널 오즈의 마법사 14부작(The Original OZ books, 1900~1920)만큼의 성과는 거두지 못해 단행본에 그친 비운의 작품입니다만, 2003년 미국 미네소타 주에서 뮤지컬로 각색해 무대에 오르는 등 작가 바움의 팬이라면 한번쯤 읽어볼만한 작품입니다.
▶ Dot listened to al this with much pleasure, and decided she was about to have a fine holiday. Her real name, by the way, was Evangeline Josephine Freeland; but mamma and papa had always called her "Dot" from the day she was born, so sometimes she almost forgot she had such a beautiful name as Evangeline Josephine.
▶ 엄마처럼 몸이 좋지 않은 도트는 아버지의 권유로 시골 영지 로젤린(Roselawn)으로 떠납니다. 시골의 자연 속에서 조금씩 건강을 회복한 도트는 정원사의 아들 소년 도트 톰슨("Tot" Thompson)을 만나자 마자 친구가 되죠!
▶ "Jack-stones," said the boy, and gravely picking out five of the white pebbles, nearly of one size, he tossed them into the air and tried to catch them on the back of his hand. Two tumbled off, and Dot laughed. The boy laughed, too, and tried it again. Before long they had become fast friends, and were laughing and chatting together as happily as if they had known one another for months.

▶ But two things worried Dot. One was the fact that she was being carried a long ways from home, and the other a fear of where the underground river might lead them. She wasn't at all sure they were not floating down into the middle of the earth, and the chances of ever seeing Roselawn again were growing smaller every minute.
▶ 마법의 나라 메리랜드에서 도트와 토트는 신비로운 모험으로 가득한 7개의 계곡을 통과하게 됩니다. 다행히 메리랜드의 여왕은 낯선 곳에서 온 소년소녀에게 호의적입니다만, 과연 도트와 토트는 무사히 로젤린으로 돌아갈 수 있을까요?!
▶ "We are delighted to have you with us, however you came here," replied the Clown; "and as for your getting home again, why, that is worry, and no one ever worries in the Valley of Clowns. You are welcome to remain our guests as long as you please, and while you are with us you must consider us your slaves, for Clowns have always been the slaves of children." Then he turned to the others.
▶ 번외적으로 오리지널 오즈의 마법사 14부작(The Original OZ books, 1900~1920) 제5편에 해당하는 오즈로 가는 길 1909(The Road to Oz by Lyman Frank Baum)에는 도트 앤 토트 1901(Dot and Tot of Merryland by Lyman Frank Baum)의 캐릭터들이 오즈마의 생일 파티에 참석하는 장면이 있답니다. 작가 바움은 메리랜드의 여왕(The Queen of Merryland), 나무 군인(Wooden Soldiers), 캔디맨(Candy Man) 등을 통해 오즈의 땅(Land of Oz) 세계관에 마법의 나라 메리랜드(Merryland)를 교묘하게 편입시켰답니다!
▶ "Her Gracious Majesty, the Queen of Merryland." They looked earnestly to discover whom this queen might be, and saw advancing up the room an exquisite wax doll, dressed in dainty fluffs and ruffles and spangled gown. She was almost as big as Button-Bright, and her cheeks and mouth and eyebrow were prettily painted in delicate colors. Her blue eyes stared a bit, being of glass, yet the expression upon her Majesty's face was quite pleasant and decidedly winning. With the Queen of Merryland were four wooden soldiers, two stalking ahead of her with much dignity and two following behind, like a royal bodyguard. The soldiers were painted in bright colors and carried wooden guns, and after them came a fat little man who attracted attention at once, although he seemed modest and retiring. For he was made of candy, and carried a tin sugar-sifter filled with powdered sugar, with which he dusted himself frequently so that he wouldn't stick to things if he touched them. The High Chamberlain had called him "The Candy Man of Merryland," and Dorothy saw that one of his thumbs looked as if it had been bitten off by some who was fond of candy and couldn't resist the temptation.
