▶ With "The Sea Fairies," my book for 1911, I ventured into a new field of fairy literature and to my delight the book was received with much approval by my former readers, many of whom have written me that they like Trot "almost as well as Dorothy." As Dorothy was an old, old friend and Trot a new one, I think this is very high praise for Cap'n Bill's little companion. Cap'n Bill is also a new character who seems to have won approval, and so both Trot and the old sailor are again introduced in the present story, which may be called the second of the series of adventures of Trot and Cap'n Bill.
▶ 이번에는 바다닷!(Underwater Fantasy) : 작가 바움의 야심차게 선보인 어린이 판타지 소설(Children's Fantasy Novel)은 트롯(Trot) 혹은 타이니 트롯(Tiny Trot)이라 불리는 어린 소녀 메이어 그리피스(Mayre Griffiths)를 주인공으로 삼았습니다. 선장인 아버지와 그와 오랫동안 일하고 이제는 은퇴한 늙은 선장 캡틴 빌(Cap'n Bill Weedles)과 함께 사는 트롯의 이야기죠! 트롯은 말처럼 네 발 달린 동물이 걷는 것보다 더 빠른 속도로 전진하는 모습(proceed or cause to proceed at a pace faster than a walk)으로 그녀의 급한 성격을 드러내는 표현이랍니다. 달리는 것보다는 쬐끔 느리지만 말이죠!
▶ 파티를 수락하시겠습니까? : 해안가를 거닐던 트롯은 큼지막한 우산을 쓴 어린 소년 버튼 브라이트(Button Bright)를 만납니다. 소년은 자신이 필라델피아에서부터 마법 우산을 타고, 트롯이 있는 캘리포니아까지 날아 왔다고 주장하는데...?! 우리의 주인공 트롯은 자신도 우산을 타고 싶어 했고, 그녀를 말릴 수 없는 캡틴 빌까지 3인 파티가 결성됩니다. 저 멀리 구름에 걸린 듯 한 하늘섬으로의 여행에 동참하시겠습니까? 가즈아!!
▶ "We can't tell anything about it until we get there," Button-Bright answered. "Seems to me I've heard of the Isle of Skye, but that's over in Great Britain, somewhere the other side of the world; and it isn't Sky Island, anyhow."
▶ 날아올라 날아올라 저 하늘로♬ : 이런! 작가 바움은 그들이 고작 눈앞의 섬으로 가는 것에 만족할 수 없었습니다. 마법 우산은 하늘로 날아올라~ 진짜 하늘섬(Sky Island)까지 날아가는데…….?! 2개의 국가로 나뉜 하늘섬은 블루스족(Blues)과 핑키스족(Pinkies)이 서로 대립하는 신비로운 섬으로, 안개에 둘러싸인 꺼림칙한 공간(Great Fog Bank)이 천혜의 국경선으로 기능합니다.
▶ "You brutes! you apes! you miserable white-skinned creatures! How dare you come into my garden and knock me on the head with that awful basket and then fall on my toes and cause me pain and suffering? How dare you, I say? Don't you know you will be punished for your impudence? Don't you know the Boolooroo of the Blues will have revenge? I can have you patched for this insult, and I will—just as sure as I'm the Royal Boolooroo of Sky Island!"
▶ 패칭(Patching)의 뜻을 아시오? : 블루스족의 영역에 착륙한 일행은 블루루(Boolooroo)가 통치하는 이곳이 무척이나 잔혹하다는 것을 알아채게 됩니다. 블루스족은 (오즈의 세계관과 마찬가지로!) 영원히 죽지 않지만, 블루루는 이를 역이용해 2명을 반으로 가른 후 서로 엇갈려 붙이는 일명 패칭(Patching)이라는 형별을 즐겨 내립니다. 듣기만 해도 무시무시하네요!! 작가 양반, 이래서야 부모님들이 자녀들에게 이 책을 권할 수 있겠소?
▶ "Well, I'm going to try the experiment," declared the Boolooroo. "I shall march these three strangers through the Arch, and if by any chance they come out alive I'll do a new sort of patching—I'll chop off their heads and mix 'em up, putting the wrong head on each of 'em. Ha, ha! Won't it be funny to see the old Moonface's head on the little girl? Ho, Ho! I really hope they'll come out of the Great Blue Grotto alive!"
▶ 어서와, 핑크핑크한 핑키스는 처음이지? : 가까스로 블룰루로부터 탈출한 일행은 맨몸으로 안개 둑(Great Fog Bank)을 뚫고, 핑키스족(Pinkies)에 들어갈 수 있었습니다. 가난한 여왕 토르말린(Tourmaline the Poverty Queen)의 지배를 받는 핑키스족은 블루스족보다 온건하고, 쾌활하였으나……. 그들의 법률은 이방인에게 추방령을 내립니다. 마법 우산을 잃은 파티가 하늘섬에서 추방된다면? 엄마야!!
▶ "Because here is one lighter in color than yourself," pointing to Trot. "This girl is, by the Law of the Great Book, the rightful Queen of the Pinkies, and as loyal citizens you are all obliged to obey her commands. Give me that circlet from your brow, Tourmaline."
▶ 아니, 오즈의 세계관에도 인맥(人脈)이...?! : 무지개의 딸 폴리크롬(Polychrome, The Daughter of The Rainbow)이 그들을 위기에서 구원합니다! 그녀는 오즈의 나라에서 버튼 브라이트와 구면이랍니다. 폴리크롬은 단순히 그들의 목숨을 구원했을 뿐 아니라, 핑키스족의 법률에 근거해 피부가 새하얀 트롯이 토르말린에 이어 여왕으로 즉위할 수 있도록 돕습니다. 왕위에 오른 트롯은 핑키스족을 이끌고, 과감하게 블루스족을 공격할 것을 지시하는데...?! 번외적으로 무지개의 딸 폴리크롬은 오리지널 오즈의 마법사 14부작(The Original OZ books, 1900~1920) 제5편 오즈로 가는 길 1909(The Road to Oz by Lyman Frank Baum)에 첫 등장한 캐릭터랍니다. 역시 캐릭터 재활용 전문가 바움답죠?
▶ "Why, it's Polychrome!" exclaimed Button-Bright, in a voice of mingled wonder and delight. "Hello, Polly! Don't you remember me?" "Of course I remember Button-Bright," replied the maiden, in a sweet, tinkling voice. "The last time I saw you was in the Land of Oz."
▶ 캡틴 빌 할아버지 구하기 feat. 트롯 : 아뿔싸! 점령전은 성공적이였으나, 이 과정에서 그만 캡틴 빌이 사로잡히고 맙니다! 분노에 찬 블루루는 그를 패칭해 버리겠다며, 살아 있는 동물을 잡아오라고 명령합니다. 과연 트롯은 캡틴 빌을 무사히 구출해 자신의 집으로 돌아갈 수 있을까요?
▶ The Boolooroo stared a moment and then he fell back in his throne, laughing boisterously. The idea of patching Cap'n Bill to a goat was vastly amusing to him, and the more he thought of it the more he roared with laughter. Some of the soldiers laughed, too, being tickled with the absurd notion, and the Six Snubnosed Princesses all sat up straight and permitted themselves to smile contemptuously. This would indeed be a severe punishment; therefore the Princesses were pleased at the thought of Cap'n Bill's becoming half a billygoat, and the billygoat's being half Cap'n Bill.
