▶ 날씨가 너무 좋은 어느 날, 장 드 세르비니(Jean de Servigny)는 대학교 동창이자 전형적인 미남인 레옹 사발(Leon Saval)은 보드빌 극장(Vaudeville theater)까지 걷기로 합니다. 둘은 당연한 듯이 정체불명의, 하지만 너무나도 매력적인 여인 옥타비아 바르딘(Octavia Bardin)에 대해 이야기하기 시작하는데…….
▶ His friend replied: "An upstart, a charming hussy, who came from no one knows where, who made her appearance one day, nobody knows how, among the adventuresses of Paris, knowing perfectly well how to take care of herself. Besides, what difference does it make to us? They say that her real name, her maiden name—for she still has every claim to the title of maiden except that of innocence—is Octavia Bardin, from which she constructs the name Obardi by prefixing the first letter of her first name and dropping the last letter of the last name."
▶ 옥타비아 바르딘(Octavia Bardin)이 3년 전 파리 에투알(l'Étoile)에 정착한 저택은 현재 파리 사교계 명사들이 어울리는 응접실로 인기를 모으고 있습니다. 그러나 젊은 사내들은 그녀보다는 그녀 못지않게 아름다운 딸에 대한 관심이 지대했는데, 그녀의 이름이 바로 이베트!
▶ "A daughter! A marvel, my dear man. She is the principal attraction of the den to-day. Tall, magnificent, just ripe, eighteen years old, as fair as her mother is dark, always merry, always ready for an entertainment, always laughing, and ready to dance like mad. Who will be the lucky man, to capture her, or who has already done so? Nobody can tell that. She has ten of us in her train, all hoping.”

▶ Servigny, who had moments of poetry, and of philosophy too, suddenly remarked: "Now this girl completely puzzles me. In arithmetic, one and one make two. In love one and one ought to make one but they make two just the same. Have you ever felt that? That need of absorbing a woman in yourself or disappearing in her? I am not speaking of the animal embrace, but of that moral and mental eagerness to be but one with a being, to open to her all one's heart and soul, and to fathom her thoughts to the depths."

▶ 이베트(Yvette, 1884)란 작품을 이해하기 위해서는 알렉산드로 뒤마 피스(Alexandre Dumas fils, 1824~1895)의 희곡 르 데미 몽드(Le Demi-Monde, 1855)에서 처음 사용된 데미몬드(Demimonde, demi-mondaine)란 개념을 이해해야 합니다. 창녀, 여주인, 매춘부 등으로 번역할 수 있는 데미몽드는 명문가에 속하지 않았으되, 그 변두리에 머물러 있는, 명문가에 속한 연인의 관심과 애정을 갈구하는 여성을 의미합니다.(The demi-monde was the world occupied by elite men and the women who entertained them and whom they kept) 이베트가 뒤늦게 알게 된 어머니와 자신의 정체에 대한 단서가 바로 이 단어에 있습니다.
▶ She drank in this air which was so good, her eyes closed, her heart reposing in the yet pervading intoxication of the drug, and she had no longer at all the desire to die, but a strong, imperious wish to live, to be happy—no matter how—to be loved, yes, to be loved.
