그림 형제가 수집한 아이들과 가정의 민화(Children's and Household Tales, Grimm's Fairy Tales)(1812) : 그림 형제 동화집(Grimms' Fairy Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm)의 원제는 독일어로 Kinder- und Hausmärchen, Grimms Elfenmärchen, 즉 그림 형제가 수집한 아이들과 가정의 민화(Children's and Household Tales, Grimm's Fairy Tales)입니다. 1812년 최초로 86편을 모아 초판을 발행하였으며, 이후 이야기를 추가하며 증보판을 발행하였습니다. 1857년 출간한 일곱 번째 증보판은 211편의 이야기를 포괄하고 있으며, 한국인에게도 친숙한 백설공주, 잠자는 숲 속의 미녀, 라푼젤, 신데렐라, 헨젤과 그레텔, 늑대와 일곱 마리 아기 염소, 개구리 왕자, 브레멘 음악대 등 수많은 유럽동화를 포괄하고 있습니다. 동화책 자체도 워낙 유명하지만, 몇몇 작품은 디즈니 애니메이션으로 전 세계적으로 흥행하였습니다. 단 애니메이션의 줄거리는 원작과 큰 차이가 있습니다.
그림 형제 이전에도 독일 민담을 최초로 수집한 요한 카를 아우구스트 무샤우스(Johann Karl August Musäus)의 Nachgelassene Schriften(1791), 아힘 폰 아르님(Achim von Arnim)과 클레멘스 브렌타노(Clemens Brentano)의 민요모음집 소년의 마적(Des Knaben Wunderhorn)(1805) 등이 출간된바 있습니다만, 언어학자인 그림 형제가 평생에 걸쳐 채록하였을 뿐 아니라 수차례의 증보판을 통해 끊임없이 가다듬은 ‘현존하는 최고의 유럽동화집’은 단연 그림 형제의 공로라 할 수 있습니다. 그림 형제 또한 동화를 본격적으로 집필한 프랑스 작가 샤를 페로(Charles Perrault)의 대표작 - 빨간 두건, 잠자는 숲 속의 공주, 장화 신은 고양이, 신데렐라, 푸른 수염, 엄지 동자, 다이아몬드와 두꺼비들, 당나귀 가죽, 어리석은 세가지 소원 등의 일부를 각색해, 자신의 동화집에 싣는 등 그의 영향을 크게 받았습니다. 그림형제의 동화집 출간 이후 그의 작업에 영감을 받아, 세계 각지에서 자국의 이야기를 수집한 책이 잇달아 출간되었습니다. 테마여행신문 TTN Korea 영어고전(English Classics)과 함께 어제도, 오늘도, 내일도 멋진 문학여행을!
