The Pilgrim's Progress

작품 정보

The Pilgrim’s Progress
The Soul’s Journey from the Burden of Sin to the Celestial City
John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, first published in 1678, is a classic of Christian literature that portrays, through allegory, the journey of a human soul toward salvation. The protagonist, Christian, sets out from the City of Destruction carrying a heavy burden on his back and journeys toward the Celestial City. Along the way, he faces despair, fear, temptation, and danger, yet he perseveres through trials by holding fast to faith and hope, continuing toward his ultimate destination.
In Part I, Christian’s Pilgrimage, the story unfolds through a series of trials and triumphs, from the joy of laying down his heavy burden at the Cross to the martyrdom of Faithful, the threat posed by Giant Despair, and the escape from Doubting Castle. Encounters with various characters, including Faithful and Hopeful, vividly illustrate the choices people face between good and evil, faith and doubt.
In Part II, Christiana’s Pilgrimage, Christian’s wife, Christiana, sets out on the journey toward the Celestial City with her four sons and Mercy. Guided by Great-heart, they face various dangers and temptations, growing stronger in faith as they help and support one another along the way. While Part I focuses on one man’s pilgrimage toward salvation, Part II explores a family and community journeying together, conveying the meaning of spiritual growth, perseverance, love, and hope.
Through these two narratives, The Pilgrim’s Progress invites readers to reflect on the fear and trials, faith and courage that anyone may encounter on the journey of life. Read by generations of readers since its publication, this enduring classic continues to inspire profound reflection on salvation, faith, and the ultimate purpose of human life.

작가 소개

John Bunyan
John Bunyan (1628–1688) was an English writer and nonconformist preacher, best known as the author of The Pilgrim’s Progress, one of the most influential Christian allegories in English literature.
Born in Elstow near Bedford, Bunyan served briefly in the Parliamentary Army during the English Civil War before returning to his trade as a tinker. After his marriage, he became deeply devoted to religion, joined a nonconformist congregation in Bedford, and eventually became a preacher.
Following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Bunyan was arrested for refusing to stop preaching and spent twelve years in prison. During his imprisonment, he wrote Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners and began The Pilgrim’s Progress, his most famous work.
After his release, Bunyan continued as a preacher and writer and became the pastor of the Bedford Meeting. He died in London in 1688 and was buried at Bunhill Fields. The Pilgrim’s Progress went on to become one of the most widely published books in the English language, securing Bunyan’s lasting place in literary and Christian history.
