캐슬린 톰프슨 노리스의 『The Story of Julia Page』는 20세기 초에 쓰인 소설이다.
Classics Read in English _ The Story of Julia Page by Kathleen Thompson Norris
The Story of Julia Page, by Kathleen Thompson Norris, dates from the early years of the twentieth century. Despite its title, the book opens with Julia's mother. Emeline Page is a woman of small means and large disappointment, married to George Page and unable to reconcile the life she has with any version of the life she once expected.
Norris lets her look backward. Emeline remembers what she wanted as a girl, and the memory sits badly beside the present — money always short, the marriage gone brittle, the days arranged around necessities she never chose. The early chapters stay close inside this household, where affection and grievance have become difficult to tell apart.
Then Julia begins to grow, and Emeline's attention narrows onto her daughter. What she could not have for herself she means to secure for the child, and the wanting is fierce and not entirely generous. Norris is unsparing here: she shows a mother who loves her daughter and resents her, who has been asked to give up everything and is not sure she consented. Out of that knot — an unfulfilled woman shaping a girl in the image of her own thwarted hopes — the novel takes its course.
In the body of the text
To Emeline, wife of George Page, there came slowly, in her thirtieth year, a sullen conviction that life was monstrously unfair. From a resentful realization that she was not happy in her marriage, Emeline's mind went back to the days of her pert, precocious childhood and her restless and discontented girlhood, and she felt, with a sort of smouldering fury, that she had never been happy, had never had a fair chance, at all!
It took Mrs. Page some years to come to this conclusion, for, if she was shrewd and sharp among the women she knew, she was, in essential things, an unintelligent woman, and mental effort of any sort was strange to her. Throughout her entire life, her mind had never been truly awakened. She had scrambled through Grammar School, and had followed it with five years as saleswoman in a millinery store, in that district of San Francisco known as the Mission, marrying George Page at twenty-three, and up to that time well enough pleased with herself and her life.
But that was eight years ago. Now Emeline could see that she had reached—more, she had passed—her prime.
Book Review
The title promises Julia Page's story, but the novel begins with her mother — and that decision defines the book. To understand what Julia becomes, we must first understand what Emeline was.
Emeline Page is among the least comfortable figures Norris created. She is poor, worn down, and both loves her daughter and expects something back from her. Norris shows, without moralizing, how much violence there can be in transplanting an unfulfilled hope into a child. The steadiness of that portrayal — refusing to make the mother either a saint or a monster — is the novel's chief virtue.
As Julia grows, the story becomes hers, and turns into a long examination of what she has inherited and what she may set down. Several incidents in the middle sections are pitched too high, and the forgiveness offered at the close is softer than the earlier chapters had earned. Even so, the book lasts, because it holds two generations of women side by side and presses a hard question all the way through: what is a daughter to do with a deprivation handed down to her?

Kathleen Thompson Norris was among the most widely read popular novelists in America during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in San Francisco in 1880, she grew up in comfortable circumstances until, at nineteen, she lost both parents within a matter of weeks and found herself responsible for her younger siblings. For several years afterward she took whatever work she could find — bookkeeper, shop clerk, teacher, newspaper reporter — and the experience of labor and near-poverty would later supply the ground beneath much of her fiction.
In 1909 she married the writer Charles Gilman Norris and moved to New York. Her first novel, Mother, appeared in 1911 and brought her immediate recognition from critics and general readers alike; before long she was one of the best-paid writers in the country. Over the next half-century she produced more than eighty novels along with a great many short stories.
Her books are, for the most part, about ordinary women: the young woman caught between work and love, the daughter trying to climb out of poverty, the wife enduring the disillusionments of marriage. She was faulted at times for sentimentality and for endings that came too easily, but her willingness to treat women's economic independence and the inequalities of domestic life as serious subjects won her a devoted readership, particularly among women. In her later years she returned to California and spoke publicly against war and capital punishment. She died in San Francisco in 1966.
