Classics Read in English _ The Beloved Woman by Kathleen Thompson Norris
The Beloved Woman, by Kathleen Thompson Norris, belongs to the early years of the twentieth century. It is a New York novel, and a family one. Mrs. Melrose is a woman of consequence — money, standing, a name people recognize — and none of it has simplified the business of her own household. Her daughter Alice has been an invalid for years. Her son Theodore has left behind matters that the family would rather not examine closely. The book concerns love and duty, the uses of social position, and the question of what a family actually owes its members.
It opens in a heavy snowstorm. The city has gone quiet under it, and everyone in the novel is shut in — with their houses, their relations, their particular circle of acquaintance. Mrs. Melrose breaks out of that confinement to visit Alice, who has kept to her bed since an accident years earlier. Norris sets the noise and motion of the street against the stillness of that sickroom, and the contrast does a good deal of the book's early work.
As Mrs. Melrose moves among her family and takes stock of what each of them is carrying, older stories begin to surface — things decided long ago that have not stopped shaping the present. From these first chapters the novel prepares its real subject: how loyalty survives, or fails to, in a society that is quietly rearranging itself.

In the body of the text
For forty-eight hours the snow-storm had been raging unabated over New York. After a wild and windy Thursday night the world had awakened to a mysterious whirl of white on Friday morning, and to a dark, strange day of steady snowing. Now, on Saturday, dirty snow was banked and heaped in great blocks everywhere, and still the clean, new flakes fluttered and twirled softly down, powdering and feathering every little ledge and sill, blanketing areas in spotless white, capping and hooding every unsightly hydrant and rubbish-can with exquisite and lavish beauty. Shovels had clinked on icy sidewalks all the first day, and even during the night the sound of shouting and scraping had not ceased for a moment, and their more and more obvious helplessness in the teeth of the storm awakened at last in the snow-shovellers, and in the men and women who gasped and stumbled along the choked thoroughfares, a sort of heady exhilaration in the emergency, a tendency to be proud of the storm, and of its effect upon their humdrum lives.

Book Review

The novel keeps quietly revising its answer to the question of who the beloved woman actually is. That is the method of the book.
The snowstorm that opens it is finely handled. New York goes silent under the fall, and everyone is shut in — inside their houses, inside their class. Norris does not use the weather merely as scenery. Mrs. Melrose's short journey to her invalid daughter is enough to show how far apart these people have drifted from one another, and the contrast between the noise of the street and the stillness of Alice's room carries the early chapters.
Norris is sharpest where money and affection have grown indistinguishable. In this family, love always arrives mixed with inheritance and appearances, and no one can speak of one without the others. The later sections resolve their conflicts too gently, and one or two characters remain positions rather than people. Still, the question the book leaves behind has weight: whether being loved and being needed are, in a household like this one, the same thing at all.

Kathleen Thompson Norris was among the most widely read popular novelists in America during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in San Francisco in 1880, she grew up in comfortable circumstances until, at nineteen, she lost both parents within a matter of weeks and found herself responsible for her younger siblings. For several years afterward she took whatever work she could find — bookkeeper, shop clerk, teacher, newspaper reporter — and the experience of labor and near-poverty would later supply the ground beneath much of her fiction.
In 1909 she married the writer Charles Gilman Norris and moved to New York. Her first novel, Mother, appeared in 1911 and brought her immediate recognition from critics and general readers alike; before long she was one of the best-paid writers in the country. Over the next half-century she produced more than eighty novels along with a great many short stories.
Her books are, for the most part, about ordinary women: the young woman caught between work and love, the daughter trying to climb out of poverty, the wife enduring the disillusionments of marriage. She was faulted at times for sentimentality and for endings that came too easily, but her willingness to treat women's economic independence and the inequalities of domestic life as serious subjects won her a devoted readership, particularly among women. In her later years she returned to California and spoke publicly against war and capital punishment. She died in San Francisco in 1966.
