<ERA 001 : Aisuke Kondo> 세상의 끝. 지난 2012년 12월 21일은 마야력의 마지막 날이었다. 세상의 종말을 얘기하며 불안에 떠는 사람들도 있었지만, 마야인들의 후손인 과테말라 사람들은 이 날을 기념해 축제를 열었다. 세상의 끝인 동시에 새로운 세상이 열릴 것이라는 기대감 때문이라고 한다.

세상의 끝에서도, 세상의 시작에서도 삶의 불안은 여전히 지속되고 있다. 그래서일까? ERA의 처음을 ‘시작’이 아닌 ‘다시’로 잡은 것은... ‘탄생’이 아닌 ‘죽음과 절망’을 이야기 하는 것은... 우리에게 탄생이란 선택이 아니다. 주어지는 것이다. 그리고 탄생에는 삶 을 누릴 권리도 주어지지만, 지속시켜야 하는 의무도 주어진다. 그래서 ERA의 처음은 ‘그럼에도 불구하고’를 말하려 한다. 당신에게 혹은 나에게 주어진 시간과 의무를 충실히 짊어지고 가야 할 이유를 묻고자 한다.

ERA001에 소개된 아티스트 아이스케 콘도 그리고 마이클 로젠의 책,『내가 가장 슬플 때』는 이런 물음의 이유를 들려준다. 아이스케 콘도는 세상의 파괴에서 비롯된 정신적 공황과 그로부터 생성되는 또 하나의 희망을 우주의 생성 과정과 연결시켜 작업한다. 마이클 로젠은『내가 가장 슬플 때』에서 그의 아들 에디를 잃은 슬픔을 과장없이 담백하게 말한다. 이 책은 에디가 세상을 떠나고 5년 뒤 만들어졌다. 책이 나올 당시, 로젠은 새로운 아기의 탄생을 기다리고 있었다. / 2013.01 이혜진

The End of Our World. Last Year 2012, on December 12 was the last Mayan’s calendar date. Some people spoke of fear in the end of our world, yet for the decedents of Mayan, Guatemala people, it was a day of celebration. For them, the end of their world meant opening of a new world with bright expectation.

At the end of the world, even at the start of the new world, the anxiety of life continues to persist. Would that be the reason? Choosing of ERA’s beginning, as not of “START” but of “RE” … not of “Birth” but a story of “Death and Despair”… For us, birth is not a choice. It is given. And from birth, although the right to live is provided, we have the duty to continue this process. Therefore, ERA’s beginning tells the “moment of despite”. ERA aims to question, if either you or I have been given the time and duty, about continuing the process of life.

ERA001 introduces Artist Asuke Condo and Michael Rosen’s 『Michael Rosen’s Sad Book』. For Artist Asuke Condo, he expresses his idea - the destruction of the world stems the mental panic, which somehow generates the hope and this complicated process is similar to the creation of the universe. In Michael Rosen’s “Sad Book”, the author refreshingly narrates his sorrow of losing his son without any exaggeration. And this book “Sad Book” was published after five years of Eddie death. ERA는 매회 한 명의 아티스트를 선정하여 그의 작품을 집중적으로 보여줍니다. 그리고 다채로운 이야기와 표현이 가득한 그림책을 소개합니다. 예술 작품과 그림책에서 다른 듯 같은 이야기를 들어봅니다. 작가들의 이야기에서 나의 이야기를 만납니다.
ERA는 예술 작품에 담긴 이 시대의 느낌과 고민을 독자들과 나누고 싶습니다.
ERA started from the struggle to express the art within the digital era. It aimed on finding the medium between the fast, easy, light-weighted digital media and deep expressions within art drawings. In order to deliver to more diverse people, ERA will be written in two languages: English & Korean.
For each magazine, ERA selects one chosen artist and focuses on showing artworks. Along with the chosen artist, a colorful and emotional picture book is also introduced. Both the artist and the picture book, although seemingly different shows similar storylines. Using these artist work, ERA aim to connect the reader with the common emotional moments that everyone share.
ERA Magazine aims to share this era’s artists’ emotions, stories and struggles to the readers.
