summary
The story begins when David Balfour, a young man from the Lowlands of Scotland, sets out to claim an inheritance after his father's death. However, he soon finds himself in a dangerous situation when he is betrayed by his uncle, Ebenezer Balfour, who plans to steal David's rightful inheritance.
David is kidnapped and put on a ship bound for America. However, the ship collides with another ship and he is thrown overboard and washed ashore in the Scottish Highlands. There he meets Alan Breck Stewart, a Jacobite (supporter of the exiled Stuart monarchy) and fugitive from British authorities.
David and Alan forge an unlikely alliance as they navigate the Highlands, facing various challenges and dangers.
As well as being a thrilling adventure, the story portrayed the complex political and cultural landscape of 18th-century Scotland. Stevenson weaves historical events such as the Jacobite Rising of 1745 into the narrative, adding depth and authenticity to the story.
