The Wars of the Roses was a civil war fought between rival factions and the Plantagenet family for control of the English throne. The two main families are the Lancaster family, symbolized by the red rose, and the York family, symbolized by the white rose. In "The Black Arrow," the adventure of protagonist Richard Shelton begins as his loyalties are put to the test when he suspects that he may have been involved in his stepfather's case when Daniel Brackley, his adoptive father with the House of York, is murdered.
It can be said to be a growth story in which the main character discovers himself along with political conspiracy and betrayal. The novel vividly depicts the Middle Ages as the protagonist and his companions battle, besieged, and boldly participate in the rescue of prisoners.
