Heedong's Big Little Day

오늘 어떤 일이 일어날까?

This picture book tells the birthday story of one little dog, while also showing how our family lives together, giving and receiving love through precious Heedong. As time flies, both joy and sadness fill my heart in the ordinary moments we share: when he breathes, eats, plays, goes potty, and falls asleep beside us.

이 그림책은 한 강아지의 생일 이야기이지만, 동시에 희동이라는 소중한 존재를 중심으로 사랑을 주고받으며 살아가는 우리 가족의 이야기도 담고 있어요. 한 해, 두 해 시간이 지날수록 희동이가 우리 곁에서 숨 쉬고, 밥 먹고, 잠드는, 그 평범하고 당연한 순간들에 대하여 행복과 애틋한 마음이 교차한답니다.

As Heedong’s mom, I often worry about the long, lonely hours he spends waiting for us when he is home alone. People say dogs feel the passing of time much more slowly than we do. So seven hours can feel like an entire day to them. Realizing how differently time flows for humans and dogs, I was inspired to write this story. When I think about how quickly Heedong’s life goes by and how short it feels to me, I wanted to capture the moment waiting gently becomes love. Waiting then would be another way of saying, “I love you.”

희동이를 집에 혼자 두고 나온 날, 가족을 기다리는 것이 희동이에게 얼마나 길고 힘든 일인지 생각이 나서 마음이 조급해집니다. 강아지가 체감하는 시간은 약 4배 빠르게 흘러서 7시간이 하루로 느껴진대요. 이렇게 사람과 강아지의 시간이 서로 다른 속도로 흐르는 것을 바라보다가 이야기를 쓰기로 결심했어요. 빨라서 짧아지는 희동이의 생명을 생각하며, 기다림이 어떻게 사랑으로 변해가는지 기록하고 싶었습니다.

How wonderful it would be if I could talk with Heedong! I often find myself imagining it. If he could speak, I believe he would say only one thing, over and over again: "I love you!" With his whole body, he shares his feelings, needs, and love. I try to understand him by looking into his eyes, watching his little face, and listening to his barks. He is my furry angel, sent to me to teach me patience and love.

희동이와 대화할 수 있다면, 얼마나 좋을까? 종종 이런 상상을 합니다. 만약 우리 희동이가 사람처럼 말을 할 수 있다면, 오직 “사랑해요!”라는 말 한마디만 되풀이할 거라 믿어요. 희동이는 온몸으로 자신의 기분, 원하는 것, 그리고 사랑을 표현합니다. 눈빛, 표정 변화, 짖고 낑낑대는 소리 같은 여러 단서들로 이 작은 생명의 마음을 조심스레 짐작해 봅니다. 희동이는 저에게 인내와 사랑을 가르쳐 주려고 온 털북숭이 천사에요.
