Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (August 28, 1814 – February 7, 1873) was an Irish writer of gothic tales, mystery novels, and horror novels. He was the foremost ghost story writer of his time, central to the development of the Victorian genre. M. R. James also called Le Fanu "absolutely first-rate as a ghost story writer". Le Fanu has written in several genres, but is best known for his horror novels. He was meticulous and often used plots and ideas from his earlier books in his subsequent works. This can be seen in the fact that many of his novels are extensions and refinements of his earlier short stories. He focused on atmosphere and causal relationships rather than 'straight horror', and liked to leave important details unexplained and mysterious. His three best-known works are the locked-room mystery Uncle Silas, the lesbian vampire novel Carmilla, and the historical novel The House by the Churchyard.
