Classics Read in English _ Poor, Dear Margaret Kirby by Kathleen Thompson Norris
Poor, Dear Margaret Kirby, by Kathleen Thompson Norris, appears to belong to the early years of the twentieth century. It takes up the question of what a marriage is actually made of, and what remains of a woman's sense of herself once the answer proves disappointing. Margaret Kirby has the life she was supposed to want. The novel begins at the moment she stops being able to pretend that it satisfies her.
We find Margaret and her husband John in a silence that has gone on too long to be called a quarrel. Looking back over their years together, Margaret recognizes the bitterness she has been carrying and understands that the marriage has already begun to fail — that they are moving toward some conclusion neither of them has named. Then comes the discovery that their money is gone. The ruin is complete, and John, unable to absorb it, is driven to an act that changes everything that follows.
What Norris sets in motion here is not simply a story of financial collapse. It is an examination of what society expects a wife to endure, what she is asked to give up without complaint, and whether any kind of happiness can be assembled out of the wreckage.
In the body of the text
"You and I have been married nearly seven years," Margaret Kirby reflected bitterly, "and I suppose we are as near hating each other as two civilized people ever were!"
She did not say it aloud. The Kirbys had long ago given up any discussion of their attitude to each other. But as the thought came into her mind she eyed her husband—lounging moodily in her motor-car, as they swept home through the winter twilight—with hopeless, mutinous irritation.
What was the matter, she wondered, with John and Margaret Kirby—young, handsome, rich, and popular? What had been wrong with their marriage, that brilliantly heralded and widely advertised event? Whose fault was it that they two could not seem to understand each other, could not seem to live out their lives together in honorable and dignified companionship, as generations of their forebears had done?
"Perhaps everyone's marriage is more or less like ours," Margaret mused miserably. "Perhaps there's no such thing as a happy marriage."
Book Review
The word poor in the title is the key to the book. It is the town's word for Margaret Kirby, not the author's, and Norris spends the whole novel demonstrating how lazy other people's pity can be.
The story opens at the point where a husband and wife have run out of things to say to each other. No single catastrophe has wrecked the marriage; accumulated silence and quiet disappointment have already finished the job. This early coolness is the novel's strength — Norris does not assign blame, she simply traces where Margaret's bitterness came from. Then the money goes. John cannot withstand the collapse, and Margaret finds herself, for the first time, in a position where something must be decided by her own hand.
The paradox of the book is that Margaret becomes most legible after she has lost everything. Comfort had been obscuring her; without it, we finally see what she is made of. Some scenes are pitched higher than they need to be, and the ending arrives more conveniently than it earns. Even so, the novel identifies something genuinely uncomfortable: that for a woman of Margaret's era, a prosperous marriage offered not security but postponement.
