"The Gray Champion" is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and first published in 1835. The setting of the story is the American colonial era, especially the late 17th century, when there was political and social turmoil.
This story is about New England, which was suffering from the oppression of Sir Edmund Andros, governor of the despot James II, in April 1689.
As the citizens of Boston rally against Andros' soldiers, an old man with an ancient appearance suddenly appears and stops the marching army. The old man is dressed in Puritan clothing, and in a commanding voice he orders the governor to step down.
Andros and his men had no choice but to give in to the old man and eventually retreat. That night Andros was imprisoned, and King William proclaimed with the news that James II had abdicated.
This mysterious old man, called the Gray Champion, appears whenever Puritan descendants need to demonstrate the spirit of their ancestors. Eighty years later he appeared again in Boston, and five years later he was also seen in Lexington. And it is said that during the Battle of Bunker Hill he patrolled the trenches all night.
The author seems to believe that the gray champion is a symbol of the New England spirit and will continue to appear at every moment of crisis to protect freedom and justice.
